Vol. 418 No. 5

Written Answers. - Finland's EC Application.

Bernard Allen

Question:

52 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs his views on recent media reports that Finland will be applying for membership of the European Community by the end of March 1992, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Finland formally applied to join the European Community on 18 March 1992. In accordance with the procedures laid down in Article 237 of the EC Treaty, Ministers decided at the Council on 6 April to refer the application to the Commission for examination. When the Commission opinion has been completed Finland's application will be fully considered in the appropriate Community bodies.
