Vol. 418 No. 6

Written Answers. - Rathcroghan (Roscommon) Interpretative Centre.

John Connor

Question:

36 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the progress made on the development of access and a centre for intepretation at the archaeological national monument site at Rathcroghan, County Roscommon; if he will outline the amount of money his Department will be spending on the site in the current year; and if, in view of its international heritage significance, European Regional Development Fund funding will be sought for development of the site.

The Office of Public Works in co-operation with Roscommon County Council are actively pursuing the question of access to the Rathcroghan complex of monuments. The various land-owners have been consulted.

There are no proposals to provide an interpetative centre at the site as the heritage centre at nearby Strokestown contains information on the Rathcroghan monuments. However, some on-site interpretation in the form of an information and orientation plaque is planned.

Expenditure on minor maintenance work this year will not be significant.
