Vol. 418 No. 6

Written Answers. - Motor Cycle Insurance.

Ivor Callely

Question:

92 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will outline (a) the number and (b) the type of submissions his Department have recently received in relation to motor cycle insurance, and if he will now request the Government to introduce price control in this area.

My Department have received over 1,400 complaints about the cost of motor cycle insurance on the lines of a circular letter organised by motor cycle interests.

I have repeatedly referred in this House to the factors which result in the present level of motor insurance costs in Ireland. These factors, of course, impact on motor cycle insurance costs and I do not see how the re-introduction of detailed price control would impact on these cost factors.
In January 1986 the then Government abandoned detailed price control, including price control of motor cycle insurance. I have no plans to re-introduce such control.
I would refer the Deputy to the reply which I made to parliamentary questions Nos. 7, 10, 32, 38, 49, 58, 69, 86, 87, 89, and 90 in this House on Thursday 5 March 1992 — Dáil Official Report, volume 416, No. 8, columns 1751-58.
