Vol. 418 No. 7

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants Scheme.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

148 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education if a person (details supplied) in County Tipperary will be entitled to a mature students grant; if he will give details of all these grants; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Amendments to the Local Authorities (Higher Education Grants) Acts, 1968 and 1978, and to the higher education grants scheme currently being finalised include provisions whereby for the award of grants: (i) mature students who secure a place in a third level institution will be regarded as satisfying the academic attainment requirements; (ii) the income eligibility of mature students who are not dependent on their parents will be assessed by reference to their own, and, if married, their spouse's income.

In accordance with normal practice, these improvements will take effect in the 1992 higher education committee scheme, and so will apply to mature students entering third level education in 1992 and subsequently.
