Vol. 418 No. 7

Written Answers. - Alternative Mathematics Syllabus.

John Bruton

Question:

173 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education the proportion of third level courses for which mathematics is an essential subject, and which do not consequently accept the second level alternative mathematics syllabus.

The alternative maths syllabus is accepted as meeting the requirement of a pass in mathematics for the purpose of university matriculation. It does not meet the requirement for admission to an individual faculty where mathematics is an essential subject for entry.

Mathematics is not required for entry to courses in arts, law and social science but is required for all other university faculties.

In the Dublin Institute of Technology and the regional technical colleges, having regard to the nature of the courses there, mathematics is an essential subject for the great majority of courses. Accordingly, the alternative maths syllabus does not meet the minimum entry requirement for those courses.
