Vol. 418 No. 7

Written Answers. - EC Structural Funds for West.

Enda Kenny

Question:

229 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment the proposals he has to avail of the EC Structural Funds to upgrade harbours, piers and roads in the west of Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Primary responsibility for the formulation of proposals for EC Structural Fund assistance rests, in the case of roads, with my Department and, in the case of harbours and piers, with the Department of the Marine. Such proposals must comply with selection criteria set out in the relevant operational programmes under the Community Support Framework (CSF) for Ireland. The main vehicle for Structural Fund assistance for the development of roads and other transport infrastructure (including seaports) is the Operational Programme on Peripherality 1989 to 1993. Structural Fund assistance for roads, inter alia, is also provided under the Rural Development Operational Programme and the Interreg Community Initiative.

Information on the implementation of the CSF at sub-regional level is provided periodically to each of the seven sub-regional review committees established in relation to the CSF in 1990. Updated information on transport infrastructure in respect of each sub-region is being compiled by my Department at present and will shortly be ready for submission to the sub-regional review committees. The information in relation to the west sub-region will be forwarded to the Deputy as soon as it has been transmitted to the relevant review committee.
