Vol. 418 No. 7

Written Answers. - ECU Currency.

Peter Barry

Question:

108 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Finance if he will issue ECU coins or notes.

A limited number of commemorative gold and silver ECU coins was issued in 1990 under the Decimal Currency Act, 1990, to mark Ireland's Presidency of the European Community. I have no plans, at this time, to issue further ECU coins.

The question of currency notes is a matter for the Central Bank, but I am not aware of any proposals by them to issue ECU notes.

The issue of ECU notes and coins is envisaged under the Maastricht Treaty. However, it is likely to be some time before any such currency or coinage could be put into general circulation in the Community.
