Vol. 418 No. 7

Written Answers. - Boyne Valley Park.

Michael Bell

Question:

117 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Finance if he will give details of the plans, if any, he has for the establishment of an archaeological park at the Boyne Valley; if he will outline (a) the proposed location of the park, (b) the estimated cost and (c) the proposed starting date; whether the residents in the area where the park is to be located were or will be consulted; if Meath, Louth and Drogheda corporations were consulted; whether they gave their approval or support to the project; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The area known as the Bend of the Boyne or Bru na Boinne, which includes the major monuments of Knowth, Dowth and Newgrange together with many other related monuments, is a megalithic cemetery of international significance and has been identified as being worthy of a special programme of conservation and presentation. This programme envisages the protection of the monuments in their environmental setting while creating suitable conditions for the public to see and appreciate them. This will involve increased protection for the monuments, improved access for visitors, additional staffing, provision of interpretative and other facilities. It is not possible to give an overall estimate of cost for these various activities which will be spread over a number of years. Significant progress has already been made, with the opening of Knowth to the public last year and it is hoped that work will commence on the construction of a visitor centre within the next few months.

Extensive consultation has taken place with local residents and the relevant local authority, Meath County Council, has been represented on an ad hoc steering committee since 1986. In addition, the county council was formally consulted on the planning aspects of the proposals and gave its approval.
