Vol. 418 No. 7

Written Answers. - Meath Arterial Drainage Scheme.

John Bruton

Question:

118 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the criteria used in assessing the economic viability of arterial drainage of river catchments; and if, in the case of the Nanny River catchment in County Meath, he will include the relief of flooding of domestic and commercial property among the economic benefits to be assessed in determining the viability of draining that river under the Arterial Drainage Act.

All possible benefits including the relief of flooding of commercial and domestic property are taken into account in assessing the economic viability of arterial drainage schemes.

The Nanny River catchment is included (at No. 14) on the priority list of minor catchments to be considered for inclusion in the arterial drainage programme. To date works have been undertaken on five schemes and deferred on economic grounds in four other cases of higher priority on the list.

Planning of all arterial drainage schemes was suspended in 1983 by Government decision. A subsequent Government decision (in 1986) authorised the resumption of planning on four schemes — the Suir, the Owenmore, the Mulkear and the Dunkellin.
There are no proposals at present to undertake a cost benefit analysis of the arterial drainage of the Nanny River catchment.
