Vol. 418 No. 9

Written Answers. - FÁS Apprentice Intake.

Toddy O'Sullivan

Question:

19 Mr. T. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Labour if, in view of the country's industrial training needs, he will outline the intake of apprentices by FÁS by trade for each year since 1987; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The best indication of intake of apprentices is the number of 1st year apprentices registered with FÁS. Details for the years 1987 to 1991 are set out in a tabular statement which will be circulated in the Official Report.

FÁS will in 1993 implement the revised apprenticeship system which has been agreed in the context of the Programme for Economic and Social Progress. The new system will be standards based which will ensure a regular flow of craftspeople trained to a standard agreed with industry.
