Mervyn Taylor

Question:

48 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for Labour if he will outline the action, if any, he is taking to deal with the serious unemployment problem in Tallaght, Dublin 24; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 33 and 48 together.

Both Clondalkin and Tallaght have been targeted by Government for specific assistance. In the case of Clondalkin, the Government established an interdepartmental committee on the Ronanstown area under the chairmanship of the Department of Justice to formulate proposals for dealing with the problems of the area generally. Tallaght is one of the areas included in the area based strategy for long term unemployment.

Under both of these interventions, additional initiatives will be announced in the near future.

The major contribution to reducing unemployment in my area of responsibility comes through FÁS. The Deputy may wish to contact FÁS directly regarding its day-to-day activities in Clondalkin and Tallaght.
