Vol. 418 No. 9

Written Answers. - Open Government Policy.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

40 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Labour if he will outline the procedural and operational changes he proposes to introduce into the operations of his Department so as to give effect to the Taoiseach's statement of his commitment to open Government; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I came to my brief as Minister for Labour with a positive and open mind and a policy of consultation with the social partners and with interest groups and individuals. My Department will continue its policy of openness in regard to the dissemination of information as far as it possibly can.

My Department operate a very busy Information Unit to answer questions from the public who either call personally or by telephone. This unit handled over 48,000 queries last year. Explanatory booklets on labour legislation are also made available.

The Information Officer is available to deal with all media inquiries relating to the activities of the Department.
For my own part I intend to be as open and as forthcoming as possible in my dealings with the Oireachtas. I will be available to the social partners and I hope to build on this to foster good industrial relations and a safer and healthier working environment.
