Vol. 418 No. 9

Written Answers. - Health Promotion/Protection Regulations.

Ivor Callely

Question:

93 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if, since the introduction of the Tobacco (Health, Promotion and Protection) Regulations, 1990, which came into effect on 1 May 1990, he has satisfied himself with the high level of support for the new provisions; whether he intends to introduce further prohibition in this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

On the basis of feedback from a wide range of interests I am satisfied that there is a very high level of general support for the regulations and there would not appear to be any evidence of widespread non-observance.

A consultative committee was established by my predecessor to examine the possible extension of the regulations to the workplace. This committee consists of representatives from the relevant organisations and agencies — the Departments of Health and Labour, the Health and Safety Authority, ICTU, the FIE and a consultant medical practitioner.

I have been informed that the report of the consultative committee will be submitted to me over the next week and on the basis of the recommendations contained therein, I will consider what further action might be needed in this area.
