Vol. 418 No. 9

Written Answers. - Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Ivor Callely

Question:

94 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if he will outline the progress, if any, which has been made concerning procedures for the registration of births, deaths and marriages which have been under review for some time; when the review is likely to be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The arrangements governing civil registration are, for the most part, a product of Victorian times, and consequently the review of the relevant legislation will require an examination of how registration procedures and structures inherited from the last century can be modified to suit modern conditions and needs. The review, which will be a major task of considerable complexity, is currently at an initial stage. While it will be progressed as speedily as resources permit, it is not possible at this point to indicate when it will be completed.
