Vol. 418 No. 9

Written Answers. - Water Supply Regulations.

Ivor Callely

Question:

100 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the regulations, if any, which are in place by his Department for the connection of modern household kitchen appliances, such as washing machines and dish washers; whether he is concerned that most of these appliances are connected to the rising main water supply by professional plumbers; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Part G of the First Schedule to The Building Regulations, 1991, sets out requirements in relation to hygiene in buildings. The relevant Technical Guidance Document published under article 5 of the Building Regulations states that the cold water supply to a kitchen sink should be taken directly from the service pipe supplying water to the dwelling and that the cold water supply to other appliances in the dwelling should be from a storage cistern. Enforcement of the Building Regulations is a matter for the local authorities.
