Vol. 419 No. 1

Written Answers. - Electricity Generating Capacity.

Austin Deasy

Question:

62 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Energy if he will outline the total electricity generating capacity in this State; the percentage of this which is generated from the different sources, such as oil, coal and others, and the overall percentage of the total capacity which is being used at present.

The information requested by the Deputy is published in the ESB's Annual Report and Accounts.

As the 1991 Accounts have not yet been published I am providing the information in respect of that year.

The ESB's total installed generating capacity is 3932 MW. The break-down by fuel sources is as follows: Gas, 35%, Coal 24%, Oil 16%, Hydro 13% and Peat 12%.

81% of the plant classified as gas can also burn oil.

Peak demand in 1991 was 2628 MW which is 66% of installed capacity.
