Vol. 419 No. 1

Written Answers. - Energy Conservation Measures.

Mary Flaherty

Question:

92 Miss Flaherty asked the Minister for Energy if he will outline the recommendations which have been implemented by his Department from the report by the Energy Conservation Group, which was published last year.

The Deputy is presumably referring to the report of the National Energy Conservation and Efficiency Advisory Group of December 1990.

A number of steps recommended by the group have now been taken. For example, the Minister for the Environment made new Building Regulations in December 1991, which improved thermal insulation standards for new buildings; the ESB have a programme of improving the energy efficiency of lighting in industry; and a free Guide to Fuel Efficiency in New Cars was issued by my Department in January of this year.

Many of the group's recommendations are the subject of proposals currently being considered, or likely to arise in the near future, at EC level, and in particular under the EC's SAVE (i.e. Specific Actions for Vigorous Energy Efficiency) Programme.
