Vol. 419 No. 1

Written Answers. - Renewal Energy Source.

Mary Flaherty

Question:

93 Miss Flaherty asked the Minister for Energy whether peat will be viewed as a renewable energy source at EC level and therefore exempt from proposed carbon taxes and taxes as suggested by a Bord na Móna spokesman recently.

The Commission is at present exploring revised proposals on a possible carbon/energy tax. I would need to know a lot more about these proposals, before addressing the question of place or categorisation of peat in any such system. However I can assure the Deputy that every effort will be made to have peat, which is one of this country's important indigenous fuels, treated in a favourable way.
