Vol. 419 No. 1

Written Answers. - Sligo Relief Road.

Edward Nealon

Question:

153 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for the Environment if he has yet received the environmental impact statement prepared by Sligo corporation in connection with the proposal to provide a new four lane carriageway road, the Sligo Relief Road, from the new bridge across the Garavogue to Carraroe; if so, if he will outline the studies which have been carried out on it; and when he expects that he will be in a position to make a decision in relation to it.

I have not received an environmental impact statement for the Sligo Relief Road but I understand that Sligo Corporation are at present finalising the statement and expect to submit it to me in the near future with an application for certification of the development in accordance with Article 38 of the Local Government (Planning and Development) Regulations 1990. The local authority are required under Article 39 of these regulations to publish notice of that application in a newspaper circulating in the district in which the proposed development would be situated stating, inter alia, that the environmental impact statement will be available for inspection free of charge and for purchase by interested persons, during office hours at the offices of the local authority during a period of one month beginning on the day of publication of the notice.

In view of my quasi-judicial role in relation to the environmental impact assessment process, it would not be appropriate for me to comment further in the matter.
