Vol. 419 No. 2

Written Answers. - Salmon Catches.

Jim Higgins

Question:

46 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for the Marine the number of salmon, (a) caught in traps and nets by a company (details supplied) and (b) caught on the rod in each of the weeks from the opening of the current season to the latest available date.

The operation of the traps at the fishery in question was put back from 1 February to 2 March this year.

The number of salmon taken by the traps since the opening of the current season is as follows (week ending March 7 to May 2): 66, 68, 108, 121, 110, 114, 160, 67, 110. The operation of the nets does not commence until the second week of May.
The angling season commenced on 1 February but the high level of the river for most of this time has not been favourable to angling. The numbers of salmon caught by rod and line, in the Ridge Pool only, were week ending 25 April 5, 2 May 1.
