Vol. 419 No. 2

Written Answers. - Mobile Phones.

Enda Kenny

Question:

49 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Justice if it is the policy of his Department to monitor telephone calls made from mobile phones, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The procedures for the issue of warrants by the Minister for Justice for the monitoring of telephone calls have been outlined to the House at various times by Ministers for Justice in reply to parliamentary questions. Warrants are issued in very exceptional circumstances in the public interest when this is necessary for security purposes or for the prevention and detection of serious crime and then only for the securing of information which can be obtained in no other way. As the Deputy will be aware, a Bill to regulate the interception of communications is currently before the other House.
