Question:

55 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for Education if he has satisfied himself with the present arrangements regarding Government support for those athletes preparing for the 1992 Olympic Games.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 54 and 55 together.

Details of grant-aid made to the Olympic Council of Ireland for each of the years 1980 to 1991 are set out in tabular form attached to the Official Report.

For 1992, grants totalling £600,000 have already been paid to the Olympic Council. In the light of the information supplied very recently by the Olympic Council of Ireland regarding its requirements for 1992 the total amount of grant-aid for 1992 will be decided and paid shortly.

Funding of individual sportspersons is provided in 1992 through allocations by the Olympic Council of Ireland and through my Department's outstanding sportspersons grants scheme. I am satisfied that the allocations which have been made under these schemes will be of great benefit to our Olympic team.
