Vol. 419 No. 6

Written Answers. - Importation of Animals.

Toddy O'Sullivan

Question:

278 Mr. T. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food whether the laws which govern the importation of animals into Ireland such as the Rabies Act and the Diseases of Animals Act, 1966 (Foot and Mouth Disease) will be maintained in 1993, when the trade barriers will be removed.

It is intended that harmonised rules governing the movement of all animals and animal products between member states will be in place by 1 January 1993 as part of the completion of the Community's Internal Market. Common control provisions regarding foot and mouth disease have already been agreed while proposals in respect of some other matters, including rabies, have yet to be presented to the Council of Ministers.
