Vol. 419 No. 6

Written Answers. - Friendly Societies Act, 1843.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

169 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he considers that the powers of the Registrar of Friendly Societies under the Friendly Societies Act of 1843 need to be updated; and if he has satisfied himself that such powers can be exercised effectively and efficiently under the present legislation in the light of the experience of a particular application made by a group (details supplied) in County Cork under this Act over a year ago which has not yet been finalised.

I am informed by the Registrar that he expects to be in a position to give a final decision shortly on the case in question. The legislation in question will continue to be reviewed as the need arises and as resources and priorities permit.
