Vol. 419 No. 6

Written Answers. - Adoption of Romanian Children.

Ivor Callely

Question:

196 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if he will consider making contact with the Romanian authorities with a view to putting in place a framework and direct contact with Romania for Irish people who wish to adopt a Romanian child; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Adoption Board has a central role in the administration of the statutory procedures set out in the Adoption Act, 1991 which regulate the adoption of foreign children, including Romanian children, by Irish residents. I understand that the Romanian adoption authorities have approached the Board with a view to agreeing arrangements for the future adoption of Romanian children by Irish people and that both authorities are currently in direct contact with each other in the matter.
