Vol. 419 No. 7

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

Joe Jacob

Question:

17 Mr. Jacob asked the Minister for Education if he will arrange for the provision of a remedial teacher for the rural south Wicklow area to service, on a shared basis, primary schools at Shillelagh, Coolboy and Carnew.

Seán Power

Question:

63 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Education if he will sanction a remedial teaching post for certain schools (details supplied) in County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 17 and 63 together.

As the Deputy will be aware, 80 additional remedial posts serving over 240 schools were allocated in the current school year as part of a national distribution under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress.

These appointments were made following the collection of data and information by my Department's Primary Inspectorate from schools. The posts were then allocated on the basis of priority of need, as indicated by the information collected by the Inspectorate.

The needs of other schools, including the schools mentioned by the Deputy, will be kept under review.
