Vol. 419 No. 7

Written Answers. - Dublin School Teaching Staff.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

20 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been drawn to the situation of the Holy Child Infant School, Larkhill, Dublin 9, which stands to lose a teacher this year because it is one pupil below the number required to retain the teacher; if, in view of the increase that this would mean in class sizes and the fact that this school has no remedial teacher, he will review the position; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The staffing of a national school is determined by the enrolment in the school on the 30th September of the previous year. This is in accordance with the agreement on staffing made between the Government and the INTO.

In the case of the Holy Child Infant school, Larkhill, Dublin 9 there were 338 pupils enrolled on the 30th September 1991 which warrants a staff of Principal plus 10 assistants for the 1992/93 school year.

The post of 11th assistant is to be discontinued with effect from 31st August, 1992, as the enrolment on 30th September, 1991 did not warrant its retention.

There is no record in my Department of an application from that school for a remedial teacher.
