Vol. 419 No. 7

Written Answers. - Capitation Levels.

Michael Moynihan

Question:

78 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Education the level of capitation at second and third level education for the years 1987 to 1992.

The rate of per capita grant in secondary schools was £140 between 1987 and 1989 inclusive. It was increased to its present level of £150 from January, 1990. However, commencing in September 1992, an additional capitation grant will be progressively introduced for the larger secondary schools geared towards meeting the cost of caretakers and clerical assistants. This additional grant will amount to £50 per pupil as secondary level in qualifying schools.

The rates of the per capita grants will be considered in the light of an examination currently being undertaken of unit costs at post-primary level.

Currently the financial assistance available to Vocational and Community/ Comprehensive schools is on an annual cash allocation rather than capitation basis. A similar position obtains for the Universities and the vocational education committee colleges.
