Vol. 419 No. 7

Written Answers. - Teacher Training Colleges.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

113 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the number of students to be admitted into teacher training colleges in 1992; the means by which students will be selected, and whether this involves interviews or any kind of tests of religious belief or persuasion.

The intake of students into the Colleges of Education for 1992 will be decided shortly, and I will notify the Deputy of the position.

Selection of students for places in the Colleges will be based on performance at the Leaving Certificate Examination, with points awarded for the best six subjects in accordance with the common points system for entry to third-level education. Candidates must, however, have achieved specified minimum grades at the Leaving Certificate Examination in Irish (including Oral Irish), English and Mathematics, and they must also undergo an interview, held by the College of their choice, to determine their suitability for teaching; no points will be awarded for performance at this interview.
