Vol. 419 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Counselling for Army Officers.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

19 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Defence if counselling for Army officers is provided prior to their undertaking voluntary career courses and prior to application for promotion competitions.

Nora Owen

Question:

55 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Defence if counselling for Army officers is provided prior to their undertaking voluntary career courses and prior to application for promotion competitions.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 19 and 55 together.

All career courses for officers of the Permanent Defence Forces are preceded by a comprehensive pre-course brief, attended by all students during which potential problems which students may have in relation to the course can be discussed.

With regard to promotion competitions, the position is that each entrant is made fully aware of the criteria and conditions governing the competition. Every effort is made to ensure that all candidates can compete freely in an informed environment.
