Vol. 419 No. 10

Written Answers. - County Kildare Commuter Rail Services.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

45 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if her attention has been drawn to any plan to introduce or expand commuter rail services for Celbridge, Sallins or Newbridge, County Kildare; if any submission has been made in respect of capital costs; if details of any such plans have been submitted to Brussels to attract Structural Fund support; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The possibility of providing commuter rail services on the south-west rail corridor which includes Celbridge (Hazelhatch), Sallins and Newbridge is being examined in the context of the current Operational Programme on Peripherality. This examination includes an evaluation of the possibilities for the construction of new stations and the reopening of others along the corridor as well as the capital cost of the project including the question of EC assistance towards the cost of such investment. I expect to be in a position to present comprehensive proposals in the matter to the Government shortly.
