Vol. 420 No. 9

Written Answers. - Recovery of CFCs.

John Bruton

Question:

153 Mr. J. Bruton and Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline (a) the local authorities which have, to date, availed of the grants for facilities for recovery of CFCs from discarded fridges and freezers, (b) the rate in his Department's Estimate for that purpose.

Details of local authorities which have availed of the grants provided by my Department for the recovery of chlorofluorocarbons from discarded fridges and freezers are set out in the following table. In addition, four local authorities have made other arrangements for recovery of CFCs, and grant applications are on hands from Clare and Laois County Councils.

The grants cover the full cost of the purchase of recovery equipment and/or the provision of safe storage facilities pending recovery. A sum of almost £50,000 has been made available under the scheme in each of the last two years and grants have averaged £3,800 per local authority. In the current year, grants falling due for payment will be met from the general provision of £400,000 in my Department's vote for waste recycling, etc.
