Vol. 420 No. 9

Written Answers. - Postal Vote/Voting Card Delivery.

John V. Farrelly

Question:

175 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outine the steps the Government intend taking to eliminate the problem of the delivery of the postal vote and the voting card for people who are eligible to vote in the 18th June referendum, if the postal strike continues; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Happily, the postal dispute has now ended. However, on 27 May 1992, as a contingency measure, I made an Order under section 92 of the Electoral Act, 1963 entitled the Referendum (Special Difficulty) Order, 1992 to provide certain flexibility for returning officers, if required, in relation to matters such as postal voting and the issue of polling cards. The Order has been laid before each House of the Oireachtas.
