Vol. 421 No. 1

Written Answers. - Afforestation Works.

Jim Higgins

Question:

36 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Energy if his attention has been drawn to the fact that many essential works related to the proper development of afforestation are not currently carried out, particularly fencing, building up, manuring and straying of spruce, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department lays down strict standards for the establishment of grant aided plantations including specifications for fencing, filling in (formerly known as beating up), manuring and weed control of all tree crops. Grant aid to the private sector is paid in two instalments to ensure that these standards are achieved and my Department monitors the work of both Coillte and the private sector. I am satisfied that plantations are being properly established. However, if the Deputy has a particular case in mind perhaps he would let me have details and I will have the matter investigated.
