Vol. 421 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cork Corporation Dwellings.

Bernard Allen

Question:

53 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment if he will provide finance to Cork Corporation for the provision of bathrooms in the remaining corporation owned dwellings which have no such facilities at present; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Local authorities are responsible for the management, maintenance and improvement of their rented dwellings, including the provision of bathrooms. Special capital funding, within the provision in the annual Public Capital Programme, is made available under the remedial works scheme for the carrying out of major structural works to designated housing estates. The refurbishment works being carried out in a number of housing schemes in Cork city include the provision of bathrooms. An allocation of £3.1 million, from the total of £16 million available nationally, has been made to the corporation for expenditure in 1992 on their housing schemes designated for remedial works. The limited funds available this year under the separate subprogramme, to supplement the expenditure of housing authorities from their own resources on the provision of bathrooms, have already been allocated in full to authorities having a comparatively high number of dwellings without bathrooms in estates not the subject of applications for funding under the remedial works scheme.
