Vol. 421 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cork City Urban Renewal-

Bernard Allen

Question:

52 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the amount of money which has been spent to date on (a) public and (b) private Cork city urban renewal schemes; and the years in which the moneys were paid and to whom.

Qualifying urban renewal development projects in areas designated under the urban renewal scheme benefit from special tax reliefs and rates remissions rather than from direct grants paid to individuals by the Exchequer.

The latest information supplied by Cork Corporation indicates that, since the scheme was first introduced in Cork in 1986, private sector projects with an estimated value of £14.1 million, and public sector (National Building Agency and Cork Corporation) development projects with an estimated value of £3.2 million have either been completed or are in progress in the designated areas of Cork.

In so far as my Department is directly concerned, between 1989 and 1991 urban renewal grants of £376,000 were paid to Cork Corporation towards the cost of environmental improvement works in and around the designated areas in Cork city. These grants were supplemented by funds from the local authority's own resources.
