Jim Higgins

Question:

94 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education is he will outline the number of second level schools which teach Russian, Japanese and Chinese.

Statistics collected by my Department on the subjects taught in second-level schools relate only to officially recognised subjects. As the languages referred to are not officially recognised subjects, my Department has no data on the schools in which they are taught, if any.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment has submitted recommended syllabuses in Russian and Japanese for senior cycle students. These are currently under examination in my Department.
