Vol. 421 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Transport Scheme.

John O'Leary

Question:

95 Mr. O'Leary asked the Minister for Education the proposals, if any, he has to improve on the public transport scheme to primary schools in view of the fact that the State and CIE would make more money if this scheme is reviewed to facilitate re-routing of school transport and the accommodation of more fare-paying passengers where there is room on the local school transport system; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The school transport scheme is under constant review, to ensure that the service is provided as cost-efficiently as possible. The primary aim must be to ensure a satisfactory service for those entitled to school transport. Where spare places are available on school buses they are filled, where possible, by fare-paying pupils i.e. those who are not entitled to transport to the schools they are attending.
