Vol. 421 No. 5

Written Answers. - Falcarragh (Donegal) Garda Accommodation.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

107 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the bungalow constructed as accommodation for a member of the Garda Síochána at Falcarragh in County Donegal is now lying vacant; if he will outline the reason it is lying vacant; whether he will consider converting this for use as a new station; if he intends to sell the old station; and if so, when.

Question:

108 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the cell in Falcarragh Garda station, County Donegal, is totally unusable and that any prisoner detained in this area is brought by patrol car to Letterkenny; and if he will outline his views on whether this is a waste of State resources.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 107 and 108 together.

The Garda house adjacent to the Garda Station at Falcarragh, County Donegal is vacant at present. It is proposed to renovate and upgrade this building to provide a new station, with cell accommodation, in Falcarragh. The existing cell accommodation at this centre is not adequate to hold prisoners and consequently prisoners are brought to Letterkenny. It is not possible to state when work will commence — this will be determined in the light of overall priorities — but I can assure the Deputy that there will be no avoidable delay.

The question of disposing of the old Garda Station at the stage when it becomes surplus to Garda requirements will be a matter for consideration by the Office of Public Works.
