Vol. 421 No. 5

Written Answers. - Drug Abuse.

Ivor Callely

Question:

115 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if he will outline which is the most used and abused drug in the Dublin area; if he will list the range of drugs that are being used and abused; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Information provided by the Dublin Drug Misuse Reporting System, which is funded by the Department of Health, indicates that the Opiates are the most used and abused drug in the Dublin area. In addition to the Opiates, other drugs being abused are cannabis, sedatives, hypnotics and inhalants.

As a response to the drug problem in Ireland, the Government produced its Strategy to Prevent Drug Misuse in May 1991. This is a multi-sectoral strategy which is currently being implemented by the various Government Departments agencies, in conjunction with the voluntary sector. The strategy is supported by funding which has been made available by me as part of the recent allocation of over £3 million for AIDS/Drugs services, most of which was allocated in respect of services in the Eastern Health Board region.
