Vol. 421 No. 5

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of related notices under Standing Order 30 from Deputies Deasy, McCormack and Creed. I propose to call the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office. Therefore, I call, first, on Deputy Deasy to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

I seek permission to move the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 30 to discuss the imminent loss of £30 million to Irish farmers because of the proposed reduction in the ewe premium. The House should be advised by the Minister for Agriculture and Food as a matter of urgency of the steps he intends to take to ensure that the proposed cut in sheep farm incomes does not materialise in view of the extreme hardship which would otherwise be caused for many farm families. I should say that all of us regret the incident which occurred yesterday in Agriculture House but it should not——

The Deputy must conform to the request that he made to my office and nothing more.

The issue at stake——

I now call on Deputy McCormack to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

I wish to seek the Adjournment of the Dáil to discuss the crisis farmers are facing due to the 27 per cent reduction in the ewe premium grant.

I now call on Deputy Creed.

I seek permission under Standing Order 30 to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to consider the important and urgent matter regarding the recent decision by the EC sheep management committee to reduce Irish ewe premia by 20 per cent in 1992 and the consequent collapse in sheep farmers' incomes.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
