Vol. 421 No. 6

Written Answers. - Douglas (Cork) School.

Peter Barry

Question:

19 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Education if he will make arrangements to appoint full-time secretaries and cleaning staff to St. Luke's School, Douglas, Cork as it is impossible for the principal in this large school to teach and manage the school at the same time.

Under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress, it is proposed to introduce a phased programme, commencing later this year to expand the provision of secretarial services to national schools with 100 pupils upwards and to post primary schools with 200 pupils upwards.

I am not in a position to say at this point when it may be possible for St. Lukes School, Douglas, Cork to benefit under this programme.

As regards the appointment of a cleaner, my Department provide funding in the form of capitation grants to meet school operating costs such as cleaning. The board of management is the body charged with the direct government of the school and therefore is responsible for the employment of cleaning staff. The employment contract would be a matter between the board of management and the cleaner.
