Vol. 421 No. 6

Written Answers. - Sexism in School Textbooks.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

26 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education whether he intends to implement the recommendations of the working group on the elimination of sexism and sex-stereotyping in national schools textbooks, which reported recently; if any timetable has been set for the implementation of the recommendations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy is aware, the report on the elimination of sexism and sex-stereotyping in textbooks and teaching materials in national schools was presented to the then Minister for Education last November.

The recommendations are being examined in my Department at present in conjunction with the recommendations of the recent report of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Women's Rights regarding gender equality in education.

It is proposed that an action programme will be drawn up to implement the recommendations in the overall context of a campaign for gender equity in education as outlined in the introduction to the Education Green Paper and elaborated in the paper itself.
