Vol. 421 No. 6

Written Answers. - Teachers' Career Breaks.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

31 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the main reasons teachers take career breaks; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Applications for career breaks are submitted to the appropriate school authorities and, as a result, the precise information requested by the Deputy is not readily available in my Department.

The circular outlining the career break scheme states that "a career break may be allowed for most purposes including further education, domestic responsibilities, starting a business or a stay abroad". I understand from informal inquiries that those examples constitute the main reasons for which teachers seek career breaks.
