Vol. 421 No. 8

Written Answers. - Ireland and EC Laws.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

147 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications whether Ireland is subject to EC laws in relation to noise and other effects from the use of aerodromes; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

To date Ireland has implemented three EC Directives on aircraft noise which effectively limit the type of aircraft which may operate through EC airports on the basis of noise level. Plans are currently in train for the implementation of the most recent EC Directive prohibiting the use of additional categories of aircraft at EC airports after 1 April 1995.

The EC is at present examining the question of control measures for gaseous emissions from aircraft engines.
