Vol. 421 No. 8

Written Answers. - Appointment of Consultants.

Bernard Allen

Question:

162 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he has a claim from the IMO for the appointment of 43 public health doctors around the country to posts at consultant level; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Following discussions with the Irish Medical Organisation on the recommendations in the Report on Community Medicine, it has been agreed in principle that a public health function would be established in all health boards at regional level. This function will be staffed, among others, by a number of public health doctors.

The salary, status and grading of doctors within the function is a matter for negotiation with all of the unions.
