Vol. 421 No. 8

Written Answers. - Doctors' Working Week.

Bernard Allen

Question:

163 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on a recent comment by a person (details supplied) that breaches by hospital management of the 65 hour working week for non-consultant hospital doctors was now becoming more and more widespread; and if he will outline his proposals to deal with this serious problem.

The 65 hour working week was introduced following a Labour Court recommendation in 1988. The introduction of the 65 hour week resulted in the development of new rosters and working arrangements. Where these were not achieved, the matter was referred to a monitoring committee. However, the terms and conditions under which non-consultant hospital doctors are employed are presently under review and these issues will be addressed within the context of this review.
