Vol. 421 No. 8

Written Answers. - Europass Recommendations.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

237 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will outline the progress, if any, which has been made towards implementing the EC recommendations (details supplied) for a community-wide senior's Europass in this country.

The European Commission Recommendation proposes that member states introduce a European over-sixties card which would facilitate access by older people travelling outside their own countries to concessions in public transport and cultural activities to which they may be entitled. Its main purpose would be to highlight the concessions which are already available in member states to this age group. The concessions available and the ages at which they apply differ as between different member states.

No member state has yet implemented the recommendation. However, discussions on the implementation of the recommendation are continuing. The Commission also intends to publish in 1993 a guide outlining the concessions available to older people travelling in Europe.
