Vol. 421 No. 9

Written Answers. - Ambulance Sirens.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

98 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Health if he intends to instruct those ambulance authorities now operating with an ear-piercing siren to revert to the original quieter siren as residents, particularly on the approach roads to hospitals, find this level of noise pollution a cause of great discomfort and annoyance.

The use of audible warning devices on vehicles is governed by the Road Traffic Acts 1961-63 and various regulations made thereunder. Emergency vehicles including ambulances are exempt from the requirements of these regulations.

Traditionally ambulance service vehicles have been fitted with air horns operated through an air compressor system. However, more modern electronically operated systems are available on the market and the suitability and effectiveness of such units are being evaluated. Emergency personnel are advised to use their sirens with discretion.
