Written Answers. - Road Improvements.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

107 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the plans, if any, which are in hand for the improvement, reconstruction and widening of Ireland's main trunk road network, including (a) the timescale involved (b) the breakdown of the estimated cost (c) the improvements which he envisages being carried out over the next two years and (d) the amount of funding which has currently been approved by the EC.

A total of 62 major projects for the improvement of national primary roads are being part-financed by the EC under the Operational Programme on Peripherality, 1989 to 1993. Updated progress charts on each of these projects were recently prepared for the Programme Monitoring Committee and copies will be forwarded to the Deputy. In addition, a substantial programme of other projects for the improvement of national primary roads is being assisted under the Operational Programme.

EC assistance for national primary road improvements under the Operational programme in the period 1989-1993 will amount to £393.57 million, of which £234.92 million relates to the two year period 1992-1993.
